Breyers Issues Nationwide Recall, Allergy Alert Over Unlisted Almonds

Breyers Issues Nationwide Recall, Allergy Alert Over Unlisted Almonds

A limited number of Breyers No Sugar Added Salted Caramel Swirl have been recalled over an unlabeled potential allergen

Customers who purchased boxes of the ice cream are asked to discontinue use immediately.

Unilever has announced the voluntary recall of a small number of tubs of Breyers No Sugar Added Salted Caramel Swirl because the labels did not identify almonds as a potential ingredient. The product was distributed nationwide.

The product in question has a unit UPC code of 7756738393, with a best before date of NOV2915GB, and was distributed in 1.5-quart paperboard tubs. Consumption of the product is potentially life-threatening for those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds.

Customers who purchased any ice cream with the listed UPC code are asked to discontinue use and retain the box in order to get a replacement coupon, Unilever instructed in a press release. No other Breyers brand products have been affected by the limited recall.

The issue was first brought to Breyers’ attention through a customer complaint and, thus far, no allergic reactions have been reported.

Breyers will also issue a notification on the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) website.

Massive Snoqualmie Recall

I think this is the first time since we've been letting you know about chocolate related recalls here that we have such a large one to share with you all. Please read this careful and follow the directions in the FDS shared post.

Consumer Contact: 213-316-8323

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — December 24, 2014 — Snohomish, WA — Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of all ice cream, gelato, custard, and sorbet for all flavors and container sizes produced on or after January 1, 2014 until December 15, 2014 because these products have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The ice cream, gelato, custard and sorbet were distributed in Arizona, Idaho, California, Oregon, and Washington may have been further distributed and sold in various retail outlets in Alaska, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.

The products are labeled Snoqualmie Ice Cream, Snoqualmie Gelato, Snoqualmie Custard, Snoqualmie Sorbet or Emerald & Spruce Ice Cream or Top Pot Hand Forged Ice Cream and have a production date code located on the bottom of the container. The date codes included either end in 𔄜”, e.g. XXX4 (pints and cups) or are listed by date: January 1, 2014 through December 15, 2014 (trays & tubs).

The voluntary recall was initiated based on the confirmation positive result of Listeria monocytogenes in the samples collected within the production facility and ice cream products that were analyzed by Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA). The company is working with the FDA and WSDA to investigate the root cause.

The Washington State Department of Health and local health disease investigators and the state Public Health Laboratories have today linked two Listeria illnesses to products recalled by Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream Company. We understand both persons were hospitalized and are now recovering.

This voluntary recall is being made with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the WSDA.

Customers who have purchased the affected product should dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase where they will receive a refund. Consumers with questions or concern may call Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream, Inc. at 213-316-8323 during normal hours of operations (Monday-Friday 9:00am-4:00pm PST).

Is KIND Kind to Your Mouth?

Have you heard of KIND, LLC? I was first introduced to them a few years back when I did a feature on our local food co-op and their organic chocolate products that you could buy. Today I want to look at the KIND Dark Chocolate Chunk chewy bar that I got via the Amazon Vine program in the fall. I've already done a review there but today we're going to look at his bar in more depth using all of our senses you except on The Chocolate Cult.

The first thing to note is that this bar breaks apart easily so it is not difficult to chew yet still crunchy. As soon as I opened the plastic bag this was in I was hit with a very sweet coconut scent that really surprised. I realize that the ingredients list coconut but given how far down on the list this was I figured I could try it without turning it over to one of our specialists. wrong. The main flavor is this coconut through and through and frankly unless I bite directly into the chocolate pieces I couldn't taste much else. The chocolate is made of both chocolate liquor and cocoa butter but without at least twice amount it really doesn't stand a chance to compete with the coconut and other sweet flavors here. It is very crunchy yet soft and the various ingredients make for an interesting texture but the flavor needs to be chocolate at least here on The Chocolate Cult.

But what do you all think, Sisters and Brothers? Have you tried this bar? Did you think it had enough chocolate?

Why Chocolate Crosses Distress Me as a Christian

WARNING: I'm about to write what may be my most controversial article here on "The Chocolate Cult." My opinions are mine alone they do not necessarily reflect those of "The Chocolate Cult" or any of our volunteers who help test and reveal products to you all. You are free to comment, but vulgarities, threats, or personal insults will be deleted and the commenter banned from this forum.

Before we start our features and regular product reviews for Easter this year, I wanted to say a few words about a trend that distresses me as both a Christian and an ancient historian: chocolate crosses. In this photo you can see an example from Russell Stover, which I found last year during post-holiday sales, but they are not the only company to make chocolate crosses. I've been seeing them for years now, first at our local Kmart, then at the CVS, Target, and even grocery stores. At least this Russell Stover one was real chocolate and didn't have a ton of artificial ingredients, but the quality of the chocolate is not the issue today. Today the issue is the message and how it may not be Christian at all, on several levels.

I fear this is a belittling of a religious symbol, and that offends me as a Christian. When I walk through a store and see the selling of faith, it offends me. Can you imagine Jesus saying, "Buy this T-shirt, kids, to brag about your faith?" I can't. Indeed, if we look to Jesus's words as recorded in our sacred books, time and again he tells us to be humble, to be focused on the belief and our fellow human beings, and not to proclaim our faith or do good deeds in order to shine in the eyes of other people. Matthew 6:1-15 is one of my favorite passages from the Bible because it demonstrates how our faith is to be private and not exclusive. It comes from within a larger context of how his followers were to behave and believe differently from those around them.

You don't need a chocolate cross to show you are a Christian, because this is not something that is supposed to be shown so that others will praise you or perhaps even to acknowledge your faith. Your faith is a private matter, not one that is any of my business, frankly, which is why I'm not going to end this post by telling you not to buy a chocolate cross. I'm only sharing my feelings, not preaching.

Furthermore, buying this symbol is really feeding into the marketplace mentality of our world. I'm sure this sort of monetization of Christianity has been happening for centuries, but I do not believe the God I worship and was raised to respect would approve. Capitalism is NOT Christianity, and if you believe otherwise, I fear you have been tricked big time by businesses who want nothing more than profit and couldn't care less about your soul. This purchasing of objects to display faith offends me at all levels, not just in the form of chocolate crosses, but Easter is approaching, so this is on my mind. So if you must ask "What would Jesus do?" I personally believe that buying X product is never going to be the correct answer. Buy whatever you like, just think about whether or not it has anything to do with following Christ or merely just being a human being who likes stuff. All human beings like stuff, and many of us like chocolate.

I'm also offended by these chocolate crosses as an ancient historian, because I think they downplay historical reality.

Crucifixion is probably one of the most horrible methods of execution ever created by humans. It was actually unusual for the executioner to nail the crucified person to the cross, since that wouldn't hold the body up very well, and the metal used to make the nails could be used for better things when ropes would do the job. This doesn't mean that they never nailed victims to crosses, but ropes are a more reliable and cheaper way to do so. Regardless of the method, though, it often took days for the condemned to die as they baked under the sun without water or food, their body in a very stressed position that added even more suffering to the slow death spiral.

I feel like eating a model of this instrument of horrible death belittles the suffering of those who died on it. Does it seem Christian to belittle how people die? I thought Easter was supposed to be religious, or is the so-called war on Christianity all a big-media lie? The earliest Christians didn't even use the cross as a symbol, edible or not, so your eating it in the form of chocolate isn't following some ancient tradition. In fact, the cross was used to belittle Christians in ancient times, as we can see in the so-called "Alexamenos Graffito," shown to the right. It was found in Rome and has been dated between the 1st and 3rd centuries.

I'm sure I've offended some of you who are anxious to run out and get your chocolate crosses. If you must buy one, Russell Stover's version is just like their milk chocolate bunnies, just a different shape. But please think about the reason for the holiday if you are Christian, and ask if there might be a better way to celebrate than eating the method of our Lord's execution.

Primary Colors Design Corp Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Egg on Peppa Pig Chocolate Chip Cookies Gable Box

Primary Colors Design Corp of Ashland, OH is recalling Chocolate Chip Cookies Gable Box with UPC 84512050159 because it may contain undeclared egg allergen. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
Peppa Pig Chocolate Chip Cookies were distributed to Marshalls Distribution Center in Georgia which were further distributed to Marshalls Stores. Primary Colors Design Corp did not distribute the affected recalled product of Peppa Pig Chocolate Chip Cookie Gable Boxes to any other states or retailers.
Peppa Pig Chocolate Chip Cookie Gable can be identified in a 7.0oz corrugate box with expiration date of 09/18/2021 on the top right of the handle and lot code of 091820 on the cookie bag.
No illness or customer complaints have been reported to date.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that Peppa Pig Chocolate Chip Cookie Gables were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of egg. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by inadvertently filling the box with another chocolate chip cookie, potentially exposing consumers to an undeclared allergen: egg.
Consumers who have purchased the Peppa Pig Chocolate Chip Cookie with the affected lot code are encouraged to notify Primary Colors Design Corp at [email protected] or 419- 903-0403 during normal business hours (8:00am – 5:00pm EST, Monday- Friday).

Pouches of Organic Coconut Smiles because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. We have ceased production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.

Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) is voluntarily recalling a number of frozen items sold at a single Target store on Oahu located at 1450 Ala Moana Blvd., Honolulu, Hawaii. The products were not held at an appropriate temperature and may be contaminated by spoilage organisms or pathogens, which could lead to serious or life-threatening illness if consumed. The recall includes items listed below that were sold on March 23, 2018 through March 27, 2018. No illnesses have been reported to date.

This recall was initiated after Target received notification of a temperature malfunction during shipment of the products to Hawaii. Once Target discovered the issue, Target teams were immediately dispatched to remove all of the impacted products from the store. Target is also working collaboratively with USDA and FDA. If guests have purchased any of the affected products, they should dispose of the products and contact Target Guest Relations at 1-800-440-0680 for assistance and a full refund. NO LONGER UPDATING: The recall of peanut-products continues to expand at such a rate I can no longer keep up. Go here to see all the recalls, as posted by the FDA. Or go here for a searchable database.

At first, the recall of peanut butter contaminated by salmonella was contained to big institutions like hospitals. But the recall has been steadily expanding as companies such as Kellogg, Hy-Vee and Perry’s are worried about the peanut butter used in cookies, ice cream and crackers.

Gee, you think with more than 400 illnesses nationwide as of Monday that maybe the Food and Drug Administration should be moving a wee bit faster? (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports at least 5 deaths and 450 sickened.) A week after the outbreak, the FDA now says Americans should hold off eating foods containing peanut butter, reports USA Today.

While the investigation has centered around a Georgia Peanut Corporation of American plant, it seems the agency that is supposed to safeguard our food supply was unaware that King Nut peanut butter, which can come in containers ranging from 5 pounds to 1,700 pounds, might be used by food makers. (Recall expanded on Jan. 28 to include peanut products produced since Jan. 1, 2007.)

Instead, the FDA worked hard to assure Americans that major national brands of peanut butter do not contain the salmonella. For the record, I had Trader Joe’s peanut butter for dinner, but I’m feeling fine.

Here are the product recalls I’ve been able to find so far.

  • Monster Cookies
  • Peanut Butter Reese's Pieces Cookies
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • Hy-Vee Inc. is voluntarily recalling its freshly made party mix and peanut brittle because the products contain whole peanuts that have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. All sell-by dates are included in this recall. The products are sold in various types of packaging and have a Hy-Vee price label attached.

FAAN: Walk for Food Allergy

Milk and dairy allergies are among the commonest food allergies in the world. They're problem with the immune system running amok. Nobody really understand why they happen, or why they seem to be getting worse.

So FAAN - The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network – is holding its third annual Walk for Food Allergy, to be held in cities across the country this fall.

Beginning August 19 and ending on November 18, thousands of families nationwide will be taking part in the third annual nationwide Walk for Food Allergy: Moving Toward A Cure campaign intended to increase awareness and raise research funding for a disease that currently has no cure. The disease is food allergy, which currently affects 12 million Americans. The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN), the nation's leading nonprofit, patient advocacy organization, dedicated to increasing education and advancing research on food allergy and anaphylaxis, will be spearheading these events in 18 cities across the nation.

The Walk for Food Allergy will be occurring in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin. Registration is now open for walk enthusiasts from every walk of life to benefit FAAN's ongoing research and education efforts. For registration and a complete list of all of the walk locations and dates, please visit FAAN's Web site at www.foodallergy.org.

Everyday Chocolatier & Recipe: Bridget's Mole

Sisters and Brothers, with a new year I want to start offering you ever more. I hope to do at least monthly interviews with chocolatiers that I know starting with some friends I have who are skilled cooks who can apply their skills to the area of Chocolate. Please give me feedback and let me know what you think of this new category for The Chocolate Cult.

First on our list is a wonderful friend of mine I have known for a few years whose name you should learn because I think she is going to become well-known in the future as a professional cook, perhaps owning her own business after she finishes school. This is Bridget Kennedy. Currently she is a pursuing a degree at a University and plans to go culinary school in the fall. In the future, using both her small business knowledge, her innate talent for cooking and a fearless approach to trying anything in the kitchen, I think she'll have great success in the future. I'm going to let her speak for herself for the most part today.

How long have you been cooking and baking?

I've been experimenting in the kitchen probably since I was 5.

How did you learn to be as skilled and creative in the kitchen as I know you to be?

Survival mechanism. Neither of my parents were good cooks, but they loved good food. Needless to say we ate out a lot. Eventually, I took to trying things out in the kitchen. I also watched a ton of cooking shows when I was little. I followed those recipes and the ones in cookbooks around the house. Eventually I learned how to experiment. One day a friend said, "Oh I really don't follow recipes." And I was like, "that's possible?" After that it occurred to me that there were plenty of things I knew how to make by heart and that plenty of techniques could transfer to different recipes. Really it was a trial and error process. Now I read food news and blogs, and of course I still watch cooking shows on TV.

How long have you been working with chocolate and cocoa products in the kitchen?

Probably since I could move around in the kitchen. Despite my mother's lack of cooking skills. She tends to be a good baker. She has made

100 dozen cookies every Christmas since she was in college. And I have memories of dropping tons of chocolate chip cookies on to cookie sheets and attempting to eat the dough when she wasn't looking.

Given all the mass media concerns about weight and other health issues, it isn’t too surprising that chocolate is often in the middle of the debates, cited as an ingredient to avoid to or use . Have any health concerns affected how you use chocolate in your own kitchen? Why or why not? If so, how has it affected things?

Chocolate is full of antioxidants and isn't bad for you. What's bad for you is excessive amounts of sugar. When I make hot chocolate, I sweeten it with splenda. And when I want a treat, I eat a small amount of dark chocolate which is wonderfully complex and bitter so you really can't eat that much. In general, I don't eat dessert that often though. I probably have a dessert about once every two weeks. So when I do make one, I throw caution to the wind and make it as decadent as possible.

Are there any particular challenges you’ve encountered when using chocolate or cocoa?

I'm sure this has happened to everyone, but I tried making a ganache to dip cookies in back in high school. I washed out the pot, but didn't dry it and of course the chocolate seized. Lesson learned there. Although I wasn't really sure what happened until I snooped on the internet for like an hour.

Also I've burned white chocolate even when it was in a double boiler before. However that only contains cocoa butter and no cocoa solids so I'm not sure if that counts for your purposes.

How do you overcome those challenges?

Make sure water gets nowhere near the chocolate when you're melting it! And don't turn your back on it either. It can burn pretty easily.

Have you ever had a failure with chocolate?

I've had momentary setbacks, but I'm hard-pressed to think of an actual failure. I work hard to block failures from my memory.

What is your greatest success with using chocolate?

Mole! I love mole. It's a very complex sauce, and it's hard to get it right.

Could The Chocolate Cult have a photo of this success or another chocolate creation you are proud of?

Would you be willing to share that recipe with our Followers? (Doesn't this photo look delicious?)

This is a Rick Bayless recipe.

"Simple Red Mole Enchiladas with Shredded Chicken"

Serves 6 to 9 w about 6 cups of sauce

Ingredients:
For 1 cup sweet-and-spicy ancho seasoning paste:
8 garlic cloves, unpeeled
8 medium dried ancho chiles, stemmed and seeded (about 4 oz)
1.5 teaspoons dried oregano, preferably Mexican
½ tsp black pepper
a scant 1/4 tsp cloves, preferably freshly ground
a big pinch of cumin
about 6 c chicken broth

For rest:
3 Tb vegetable oil
2 oz whole almonds (about ½ c)
1 medium white onion, sliced 1/8 inch thick
1/4 c raisins
5 oz ripe tomatoes (1 small round or 2-3 plum)
scant ½ tsp cinnamon, preferably mexican canela ground
1/4 c roughly chopped Mexican chocolate (about 1.5 oz)
2 slices firm white bread, toasted (or ½ mexican bolillo)
sugar, about 1 Tb
Salt, about 2.5 tsp, depending on broth saltiness
18 corn tortillas
A spoonful or two sesame seeds
3 c cooked and shredded chicken

1. Making paste:
Roast unpeeled garlic on ungreased skilled over medium heat until soft and blackened in spots, about 15 min cool and peel. While garlic roasting, toast chiles on another side of skillet: 1 or 2 at a time, open them flat and press firmly on hot surface w a spatula. When they crackle, flip them and press down to toast on other side. In bowl, cover chiles with hot water and rehydrate 30 minutes, stirring to ensure even soaking. Drain and discard water.

Combine oregano, black pepper, cumin, cloves in a food processor along with chiles, garlic and 2/3 c of broth. Process. Add a little more liquid if needed to make a paste that goes through blender blades. Press through strainer into a bowl.

2. For mole:
In Dutch oven, heat 1.5 Tb oil. Add almonds and toast about 3 min. Using slotted spoon, remove almonds to a blender or food processor. Add half of the onion to the pan and cook until brown, about 10 minutes. Scoop into food processor with almonds. Add raisins, stir, then scoop in with almonds.

Roast tomatoes on baking sheet 4 inches below hot broiler until blackened on one side, about 6 minutes, then flip and roast the other side. Cool, peel, and add to the almond mixture along with the cinnamon, chocolate, and bread. Add 1 cup of broth and blend

Return the pot to medium high and add oil if needed. Add ancho mixture and cook, stirring until darker and very thick, about 5 minutes. Add almond mixture and cook until very thick again. Stir in rest of 4 1/3 cups broth, simmer over med-low 45 min

Taste and season with salt and sugar

Set up steamer heat to a boil. Wrap tortillas in 2 stacks in heavy kitchen towels, lay in the steamer, and cover tightly. Boil 1 min, turn off heat. Let stand 15 min.
Turn on oven to lowest setting and warm 6-9 plates. Toast sesame seeds in small skillet 2-3 min.

In med-size saucepan, combine chicken w 1.5 c mole and warm over medium heat. Bring remaining mole to a simmer

Make enchiladas by putting 2 Tb chicken into a tortilla, rolling, and placing on a warm dinner plate. Put 2-3 per plate and douse with hot mole. Strew with onion and sesame seeds

You can leave out the sesame seeds if they're not around. And don't' freak out about the raisins they just add a nice sweetness. Oh and you can get away with cooking the tortillas in a damp towel in the microwave :).

To cook the chicken poach chicken legs in water with salt, an onion sliced, some garlic, and a bay leaf. When it's done, shred the chicken off the bones and discard the skin. This will probably take 25 minutes. Skim off any foam that arises.

Finally, do you have a favorite cookbook of chocolate recipes, or do you prefer family recipes?

I don't have a favorite specifically chocolate cookbook. For cookies, I do tollhouse. An d otherwise I like Cook's Illustrated for reliable recipes sometimes they're a bit fussy though. When I need brownies though, they're a great resource. They have a cookbook that's just on baking that has some really great reviews.

Thank you so much for speaking with The Chocolate Cult today, Bridget.

Thank you, Sisters and Brothers for reading this interview today. Let me know what you think and I hope we can do more in the future.

Sisters and Brothers, may you too take the time to slowly appreciate what the Divine and human ingenuity have offered you in chocolate.
