This is a great twist on the classic bellini champagne cocktail. It results in a wonderful, deep orange colour.

  1. Pour the blood orange juice into a champagne flute. Top with the champagne. Garnish with slices of blood orange, if desired.

Blood Orange Bellinis

So naturally, right before I sat down to write this drink post, I went to grab my glass of wine that I had just poured and taken one sip out of and what did I do? Of course spilled it! ALL.OVER everything that is important in life (aka my iPhone and my laptop case). Thankfully the laptop wasn&rsquot harmed but I was really freaking out that my iPhone was. Luckily I had a case on that too and the screen is pretty water repellant so all was good..except for that now empty glass of wine! Definitely fixed that. Anyway &ndash so speaking of wines, I&rsquom REALLY into sauvignon blanc&rsquos because of their grapefruit taste. I adore grapefruit but because of the medication I take, I cannot ever have grapefruit because it has some weird interaction with the medicine and can ruin my kidneys (gasp!). So I guess turning to wine isn&rsquot a horrible thing, but anyway &ndash my point is, since Jason knows how much I adore grapefruit and white wine, he picked out a sauvignon blanc for me recently and it is like my favorite wine brand ever now.

Let&rsquos ignore the fact that the wine brand sounds like a stripper (I honestly don&rsquot know why I associate it with a stripper name) but have you ever tried Kim Crawford&rsquos sauvignon blanc? An ice cold glass of it is so refreshing in the evenings. I rarely drink and now I&rsquom drinking a glass every evening or every other evening. It&rsquos that good!

But, we can&rsquot ever forget my all-time favorite, and the one we had an insane amount of at our wedding: Prosecco. My first true love.

Given that it is blood orange season (it&rsquos running close to the end of it, I think), and the fact that I love brunch drinks, I thought it&rsquod be fun to make a blood orange bellini! It&rsquos a fun drink to have with some girlfriends and it&rsquos also really refreshing to have a glass of this during a Sunday brunch at home. It&rsquos really easy to make and delicious! I love blood oranges. They&rsquore stunning in color and have so much depth of flavor.

What do you think of my little gif (animated movie) above? Isn&rsquot it fun?! I didn&rsquot even intend on making one but that morning, Jason was on FaceTime with his parents and I needed a pouring shot so I set up my tripod and remote control and went to town on snapping multiple photos in a row. When I was culling through my photos on the computer, it worked out that they would be awesome sequential shots for a gif movie! Yay :)


Recipe Summary

  • 1 quart fresh blood orange juice or fresh orange juice (about 12 blood oranges or 8 large navel oranges)
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh lime juice (about 12 limes)
  • 1 1/2 cups Cointreau or other triple sec
  • 3 1/2 cups silver tequila
  • Kosher salt
  • 1 blood orange or orange wedge, plus 12 thin blood orange or orange slices
  • Ice
  • 1 dozen small sage sprigs or leaves

In a large pitcher, mix the blood orange juice with the lime juice, Cointreau and silver tequila. Refrigerate until chilled, at least 30 minutes.

Spread a small mound of salt on a small plate. Moisten the outer rim of 12 martini glasses with the orange wedge, then dip the rims into the salt to lightly coat.

Add ice to the pitcher and stir well, then strain into the prepared glasses. Garnish each margarita with a blood orange slice and a sage sprig and serve.

Pork Cutlets with Orange Gremolata

I posted this years ago, but, @sueinsf, with your new Blood Orange olive oil, I thought you may want to see this.

Pork Cutlets with Orange Gremolata

Make sure to grate the rind before juicing the orange. You can sub chicken or a firm, white fish for the pork. For a quick side: combine 1½ cups cooked orzo with 2 teaspoons olive oil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 2 sliced green onions, and 2 ounces dried cranberries.

Yield: Serves 4 (serving size: 3 ounces pork and 2 Tablespoons sauce)

2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 pound pork tenderloin, trimmed and cut into 12 thin slices
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
2/3 cup fresh orange juice (about 2 medium oranges)
1/3 cup water
2 Tablespoons orange marmalade
2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 Tablespoons finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1 teaspoon grated orange rind
½ teaspoon minced fresh garlic

Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Place flour in a shallow dish. Sprinkle pork with ½ teaspoon salt dredge pork in flour. Add 2 teaspoons oil to pan swirl to coat. Add 6 pork slices to pan cook 2 minutes on each side or until browned and done. Place cooked pork on a platter keep warm. Repeat procedure with remaining 2 teaspoons oil and remaining 6 pork slices.

Add orange juice, 1/3 cup water, marmalade, and vinegar to pan, scraping pan to loosen browned bits. Bring to a boil cook 3 minutes or until liquid is reduced to ½ cup. Stir in remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper.

Place parsley, orange rind, and garlic in a small bowl stir with a fork to combine. Spoon orange juice mixture over pork sprinkle evenly with orange rind mixture.


Easy Kentucky Bourbon Coffee Recipe


My love for coffee is quite evident, and I’m always finding various recipes and methods to enjoy it. But with all my options out there, I’d have to say that my favorite no-fuss way of incorporating coffee into my day is by using Java House® Dual-Use Liquid Coffee Pods to make up a cup of cold brew coffee, hot or cold. You might be curious as to what the difference is between cold brew and traditional brewed coffee is, or if it’s over ice, then isn’t this simply iced coffee?

Cold brewed coffee is more balanced, smooth tasting and has less acidity than what you’ll find in a cup of traditionally brewed coffee. And no, cold brew is not iced coffee.

Iced coffee is simply traditional coffee over ice, which eventually dilutes the coffee to leave you with a wimpy cup of bitter joe. Cold brew is intense, steeped in cold water for many hours using coarse coffee grounds leaving you with a smooth cold brew coffee with all its rich chocolate and caramel notes of glory.

January is, without doubt, the most miserable month of the year – short days, long nights, frosty mornings and the ever-present threat of rain. It does bring a few silver linings for foodies, though, not least the appearance of delicious blood oranges in our supermarkets and greengrocers.

Blood oranges are at their best in January and February in the UK and prized by chefs for their sweet, sharp flavour, which has hints of raspberry to it as well as the usual citrus notes. Blood oranges are a natural mutation of the orange, which is itself believed to be a hybrid of the pomelo and the tangerine.

Sicilian Tarocco oranges (Arancia Rossa di Sicilia) are probably the best known of all as they’re PGI-protected, but you’ll see a number of different varieties at various points of the year – Sanguinellos are mostly grown in Spain, and Moro, Maltese and Delfino varieties are becoming more common.

You can more or less ignore the skin colour if you’re looking for ripe blood oranges – this has more to do with variety than ripeness instead, choose oranges that feel heavy for their size.
